Bone Regeneration

A scientific and clinical review of new synthetic material and surgical protocols

Dr. Dominic O’ Hooley & DR. Gita Zommerfelde-Antipina

EthOss material has gained significant popularity in recent years, and clinicians have been trying various treatment options to explore its possibilities. However, pushing the limits has sometimes led to unpredictable results. Dominic will focus on the most important rules to keep in mind for predictability, not only in simple cases but also in how to reliably increase the range of treatment options with EthOss.

In modern Dental Implantology, like in Orthopedics and Regenerative Medicine, our aim is to restore the form and function of the lost bone, so that we can give back to our patients exactly the same tissue, a healthy bone tissue that can remodel and adapt to the transmitting occlusal forces. Only the host can regenerate bone so especially in the aesthetic zone we need to work with and up-regulate this host healing for optimal long-term outcomes

A new generation of novel alloplastic materials may elicit a controlled action and reaction to the host tissue environment, whilst exhibiting controlled chemical breakdown and resorption with an ultimate replacement by new bone. As surgeons, if bone regeneration is the aim of our treatment, a fully resorbable material should be used so that the newly formed bone will be in identical to the lost host bone and no residual graft should be present in the long term. Long-term incorporation of non-resorbable graft particles in the augmented bone leads to incomplete regeneration, so in these cases, repair or bone augmentation are more appropriate terms. Novel synthetic biomaterials are designed to be not only osteoconductive but also osteoinductive.

The aim of this lecture is to discuss these concepts and developments and to present new minimally invasive protocols in order to optimize the host regeneration.

One of the key advantages of Ethoss is its excellent handling properties. It is easy to prepare and mold into the desired shape, making it suitable for a range of applications including bone defects, cysts, and extraction sockets.

In addition to Dr. Dominic O’Hooley’s lecture Dr. Gita Zommerfelde-Antipina, DDS, Dip Pros, PGDip (Imp Dent) will give exclusive presentation where she showcases her clinical cases utilizing Ethoss. In collaboration with Professor Tomas Linkevicius, Dr. Zommerfelde-Antipina jas been actively involved in groundbreaking clinical study focusing on the “ Use of Individual and Standard Healing Abutments for Immediate Molars: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial.”
This lecture provides a unique opportunity to delve into the wolrd of cutting-edge dental research and practice. Dr. Zommerfelde-Antipina will offer a comprehensive overview of her clinical cases, demostrating the practical application of Ethoss in real-life scenarios.

The course also includes a panel discussion, where Dr. O´Hooley will look into cases made in our local country that either failed or had partial results. Through these cases we will learn how to avoid mistakes and achieve optimal outcomes in a wider range of treatment options.

Dominic O’Hooley

Dominic is a highly experienced implant dentist who has been placing and restoring dental implants for many years and undertakes all aspects including bone grafting, sinus surgery, guided bone regeneration and immediate full arch implant bridges. "I have a particular interest in working within the aesthetic zone, crestal sinus augmentation and immediate implant placements."

Gita Zommerfelde-Antipins

Gita is a dentist with 18 years of experience in her field. Her specialization is dental prosthetics and implantology, using minimally invasive treatment tactics.

Gita's path to a doctor's diploma began in 2003 at the Faculty of Stomatology of Riga Stradins University. Her determination and desire to prove her knowledge and skills culminated in a diploma at the excellent Cambridge Academy of Dental Implantology.
